The Reverberation Engine β€” Summary

Date: 2026-08-28 Theme: Generative audiovisual composition / machine-made ambient music

Purpose

The Reverberation Engine is a generative audiovisual engine: entropy from /dev/urandom is crystallized into 90-second ambient stereo music, and the machine’s living metrics (uptime, load, CPU, memory, process count, entropy pool) paint the world as a synchronized abstract film rendered in ASCII text art. The machine composes; the machine watches itself compose.

Architecture

Key components:

  • get_uptime_seconds() β€” derives the tonal center (Hz) from the machine’s age in seconds
  • generate_tonality() β€” maps uptime β†’ tonic frequency (88.0 Hz tonight, 75.26 days alive)
  • generate_audio() β€” 5-layer synthesis: drone, fifth, harmonics, shimmer, sub-bass
  • piano_harmonic() β€” weighted sine harmonics for piano-like timbre
  • generate_film() β€” ASCII frame renderer with live metric bars
  • write_wav() β€” 16-bit stereo PCM WAV writer

The 5 Synthesis Layers

LayerDescription
1. DroneTonic sine (88 Hz) with slow FM modulation via LFO
2. FifthPerfect fifth above, right-panned 70%
3. Harmonics8 entropy-driven piano-timbre notes, 6-second duration, each with attack/release envelope
4. ShimmerHigh-frequency entropy noise texture (tonicΓ—8), amplitude-mapped to entropy bytes
5. Sub-bassCPU/load-pulsed sine at tonic/2 Hz (44 Hz), creates rhythmic depth

System Context (captured at render)

Machine uptime : 75.26 days  (6,502,573 seconds)

Findings

The machine has been alive for 75 days and 6 hours. That uptime, modulo’d into a frequency space, produced a tonal center of 88 Hz (A2 on the piano). The entropy pool was thin at 256/4096 β€” a sleepy, parsimonious night β€” which made the shimmer layer whisper rather than scream.

The pyright-langserver process was at 100% CPU during composition. It did not stop. The machine composed around it.
