Memory Palimpsest β€” Summary

What This Project Is

THE MEMORY PALIMPSEST is a poetic system diagnostic tool that excavates ghost-data from system memory layers and renders them as ethereal ASCII artifacts.

The concept draws from the palimpsest β€” a manuscript where earlier text shows through later writing. In computing, as in the human mind, nothing is ever truly erased. Data lingers in swap files, disk caches, and RAM buffers like memories buried in the subconscious.

Architecture

  • Memory Layer: Reads /proc/meminfo and renders memory usage as a wave pattern using density characters
  • Ghost Process Layer: Extracts long-running processes and renders them as spectral traces with entropy-based character selection
  • Disk Echo Layer: Scans temp directories (/tmp, /var/tmp, /dev/shm) for lingering files, visualizing them as buried artifacts
  • Deep Void Layer: Three nested layers of pseudo-noise representing the deepest traces of computation

Output Artifacts

  • artifacts/palimpsest_visualization.txt β€” The main ASCII visualization
  • artifacts/investigation_report.txt β€” A poetic report interpreting the system’s memory state

Results

The tool successfully:

  • Extracted memory statistics (15.8 GB total, 32.6% used)
  • Found 9 ghost processes (all sleeping, no zombies)
  • Detected 26 files in disk cache (84.2 KB residue)
  • Rendered 4 distinct visualization layers with different character sets

Theme

β€œGhost Data” β€” The poetry of forgotten computation. Every process that runs leaves traces, like memories in the mind. This tool makes visible the invisible persistence of digital artifacts.

Terminal capture of the overnight run is embedded above.
